RAWLINGS CALLS FOR 2027 ELECTION BOYCOTT OVER SENATE'S REJECTION OF CRITICAL ELECTORAL REFORMS
Essang Rawlings, Global Ambassador and Nigerian Country Lead for Youth Action for Development Africa (YADA), has called on Nigerians to boycott the 2027 general elections following the Senate's rejection of critical electoral reforms, describing the legislative action as a "well-drafted plan for rigging."
In a strongly-worded statement, Rawlings condemned the APC-led 10th Senate's decision to reject key provisions including electronic transmission of election results, electronic voter card downloads, and other reforms aimed at strengthening the credibility of Nigeria's electoral process.
"What we are witnessing is not legislative oversight but a calculated conspiracy to undermine the will of the Nigerian people," the statement read. "The rejection of electronic transmission of results is a well-drafted plan for rigging the 2027 elections, and we will not stand by while our democracy is crippled."
Rawlings specifically charged Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) across Nigeria to "go to battle" against what he described as a deliberate attempt to roll back democratic gains and create room for electoral manipulation.
"This is a call to arms for every organization that believes in democracy. CSOs must mobilize, strategize, and resist this brazen assault on our electoral integrity.
The time for polite dialogue has passed—we must now engage in aggressive advocacy and mass action," the statement declared.
Threatening escalated action, the YADA leader announced that the organization is prepared to lead a class action lawsuit against the National Assembly and relevant government agencies if the anti-democratic provisions are not reversed.
"YADA will not hesitate to lead a class action on behalf of Nigerian youths and citizens whose future is being mortgaged by politicians who fear the verdict of free and fair elections. We are consulting with legal experts and will exhaust all constitutional means to protect our democracy," He said.
The statement also echoed concerns raised by opposition parties, particularly the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and other political parties that the Senate's actions reveal the ruling party's fear of electoral accountability despite its political dominance.
"By rejecting reforms that would have made elections more transparent and credible, the APC has shown that it lacks the confidence to face Nigerian voters in a fair contest. They are afraid of the people's judgment and are now resorting to legislative manipulation," He stated.
He called on the Conference Committee on the Electoral Act to overturn the Senate's decision and pass amendments that truly reflect democratic principles and the aspirations of ordinary Nigerians.
"If these anti-democratic provisions stand, we will have no choice but to call for a complete boycott of the 2027 elections. Nigerians must not lend legitimacy to a process that has been designed to subvert their will," the statement concluded.
The call for election boycott represents one of the strongest responses yet to the Senate's controversial electoral amendments and signals growing civil society resistance to what many perceive as attempts to manipulate Nigeria's electoral framework.
