Monumental waste: FEC approves N142 billion for construction of six modern bus terminals across Nigeria

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved N142 billion for the construction of six modern bus terminals across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones, awarding the contract to Messrs Planet Project Limited, the firm behind Lagos’ Oshodi Transport Interchange. Minister of Transportation, Said Alkali, disclosed this on Wednesday after the FEC meeting presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Read more here:https://nairametrics.com/2025/08/14/fec-approves-n142-billion-for-construction-of-six-modern-bus-terminals-across-nigeria/# EDITORS COMMENT: Why is the the federal Government embarking on the wasteful project? Firstly, building bus terminal is within the purview of the state and LG. Secondly, N142B can be used to purchase more CNG buses, build CNG plants, fix road or even invested as a transportation investment fund or SMEs. Thirdly, it can also be further invested in the rail sector.

Nigeria nets ₦84.97 billion in six months after extending transfer levy to fintechs

When Kemi Michael , a corporate compère , attempted to transfer money to her usual PoS agent in late 2024, the attendant had a tip for avoiding an extra charge: “Send ₦9,500 instead of ₦10,000 so I don’t have to add ₦50 to the withdrawal fee.” According to her, it worked for a while but was not sustainable. That ₦50 charge, the Electronic Money Transfer Levy (EMTL), was extended to fintechs like Opay , Palmpay , and Moniepoint in December 2024, and in six months, increased government revenue by ₦84.97 billion, according to Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) data. https://techcabal.com/2025/08/12/nigeria-nets-%e2%82%a684-97-billion-in-six-months/

INEC's Exclusion of Labour Party Candidates Ignites Public Outcry, Questions Democracy's Integrity

With just weeks to Nigeria’s crucial August 16 bye-elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has come under intense scrutiny following its controversial decision to exclude Labour Party (LP) candidates from the ballot—an action many analysts have described as an alarming threat to democratic fairness. Among those affected is Adewale Michael Adesanya, the Labour Party candidate for the Remo Federal Constituency, who was duly nominated on July 19, 2025, but whose name was omitted from the final list of cleared contestants. The commission cited unresolved internal disputes within the party as grounds for the disqualification, a justification the party’s leadership and several civil society actors have fiercely rejected. “This is not just about me—it’s about the people whose voices risk being silenced,” said Adesanya. “Our campaign has always been rooted in community, youth inclusion, and policy-driven transformation. We will seek legal redress and ensure this injusti...
