  Obasanjo: Picking Atiku as VP my biggest regret — thank God his actions couldn’t harm Nigeria Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says he regretted picking Atiku Abubakar as his vice-president. Obasanjo spoke on Friday during a fireside chat with Charles Oputa, activist popularly known as Charly Boy, in Lagos at the unveiling of Charly Boy’s foundation and his memoir: ‘999: A Memoir in Tribute to Late Justice Chukwudifu Oputa’. Obasanjo served two terms as Nigeria’s president alongside Atiku between 1999 and 2007. However, the relationship between the two men later became frosty during Obasanjo’s second term in office.   Onaiyekan: Tinubu’s government bent on winning 2027 elections by all means John Onaiyekan, the cardinal and former archbishop of Abuja, says those around President Bola Tinubu are painting a “rosy picture” of the country to him, contrary to the true picture of the state of the nation. Onaiyekan spoke on Friday during the ‘Prime Time’ programme on Arise Television. On Tuesday, the leadership of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), led by Matthew Ndagoso, its president, visited  Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.   Army rescues kidnapped lieutenant colonel, civilian in Enugu Troops of the Nigerian Army have rescued a kidnapped senior military officer, Lt. Col. Ofor Amobi, and a civilian, Mr Ikechukwu Onwuanra, after a 10-day joint search-and-rescue operation in Enugu State. This is contained in a military operational report made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abuja. The military said the victims were rescued in the early hours of Friday, following sustained pressure on their abductors. The military said troops of Sector 1 of Operation UDO KA, comprising personnel of the 82 Division Garrison, 103 Battalion (Reinforced), the Nigerian Navy Special Boat Service and the 197 Special Forces Battalion, carried out the operation.   FIFA scraps plan to sell off stake in World Cup FIFA President ‌Gianni Infantino  has scrapped plans to sell a ‌stake in the World Cup to private investors after a widespread backlash. Infantino had given football associations until September 19 to back his plan to sell off part of FIFA to private investors with a £30.1m ($40m) incentive to accept. FIFA had announced on Tuesday that it was seeking to launch FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), which would bring together the sale of FIFA's commercial rights - including broadcasting, sponsorship, ticketing and licensing - with the operational delivery of its tournaments. But the controversial proposals received fierce  criticism from  UEFA, CONCACAF  and the  Asian Football Confederation (AFC) , with  Prime Minister Andy Burnham  adding his condemnation by calling for "FIFA to undertake an urgent review of its governance".
