BREAKING: ASUU Announces Two-Week Nationwide Strike Starting October 13
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced a two-week nationwide warning strike, set to commence at midnight on Monday, October 13, 2025, following the Federal Government’s failure to meet its long-standing commitments to the union.
ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, made the announcement during a press briefing held at the University of Abuja on Sunday. He stated that the decision was reached after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government on September 28.
“There is nothing sufficient on ground to prevent this action,” Piwuna said, adding that all ASUU branches have been directed to fully comply with the strike directive once the deadline elapses.
The union said the strike action became necessary due to the government’s continued neglect of key agreements and welfare concerns. ASUU’s major demands include improved welfare and salary structures for lecturers, adequate funding and revitalization of public universities, and full implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement.
While the Federal Government has reportedly released ₦50 billion for Earned Academic Allowances and earmarked ₦150 billion in the 2025 budget for tertiary institutions, the union insists that these steps are “piecemeal measures” without clear timelines or tangible commitment.
The strike, if enforced, is expected to disrupt ongoing academic sessions in public universities, delay examinations, and further extend the already strained academic calendar. Students and parents have expressed concern over the recurring industrial actions that continue to affect Nigeria’s university system.
Stakeholders are urging both parties to return to the negotiation table to prevent another prolonged shutdown of universities across the country.
INFOCITY will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as events unfold.
