NIMC Faces Public Outrage Over Birthday Post for Seyi Tinubu

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has come under intense criticism after its official X (formerly Twitter) handle posted a birthday message celebrating Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The post, which featured a flier bearing Seyi Tinubu’s image and the NIMC logo, read:

> “Happy birthday, Barr. Seyi Tinubu. May God bless you with wisdom, favour, and lasting joy. This milestone marks the start of even greater achievements ahead. The best is just beginning.”

The message was signed by NIMC’s Director-General, Engr. (Dr) Abisoye Coker-Odusote.

However, the gesture quickly sparked backlash from Nigerians across social media, who questioned why a federal agency responsible for managing the country’s national identity database would publicly celebrate the President’s son.

Critics described the post as inappropriate and partisan, arguing that NIMC should remain neutral and focused on its statutory duties rather than engaging in acts that appear politically motivated.

Some users accused the Commission of using public resources for political favoritism, while others said the post reflected a growing trend of “personalization of public institutions.”

As of press time, NIMC has not issued an official statement or apology regarding the post, which remained visible for several hours before being widely circulated online.

According to the Centre, nowhere in Bishop Kukah’s comments did he diminish the seriousness of faith-based persecution in Nigeria. Instead, it reaffirmed that the Bishop has consistently highlighted the alarming rise in targeted attacks on Christian com...
