SENATE CONFIRM PROF. JOASH AMUPITAN NEW INEC CHAIRMAN

Senate Confirms Prof. Joash Amupitan as New INEC Chairman

Nigeria’s Senate has confirmed Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following a rigorous screening session at the National Assembly on Thursday.

Amupitan, a Professor of Law and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, addressed the Senate to dispel reports linking him to the legal team of President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 Presidential Election Petition Tribunal. He described such claims as false and misleading, emphasizing that he has no political affiliations with President Tinubu or the All Progressives Congress (APC).

His nomination had generated mild controversy after media reports alleged his involvement with the ruling party’s legal counsel in the 2023 elections. However, Amupitan clarified that his career has been guided strictly by professionalism and academic integrity.

The newly confirmed INEC boss pledged to restore public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system, beginning with the upcoming Anambra Governorship Election in November. He outlined plans to strengthen the Commission’s independence and transparency through improved logistics, voter education, and deployment of technology—particularly addressing lapses associated with the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) during the last general elections.

After over two hours of deliberation, the Senate described Amupitan as “worthy in content and character, fit and proper for the job,” before confirming his appointment in line with the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Professor Amupitan, who hails from Kogi State, succeeds Professor Mahmood Yakubu, becoming the sixth INEC Chairman since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999.

Kukah Centre Denounces Misleading Reports, Reaffirms Stand on Ongoing Persecution of Christians The Kukah Centre (TKC) has issued a strongly worded statement distancing itself from media reports that falsely suggest its founder, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, denied the existence of Christian persecution or genocide in Nigeria. Atta Barkindo, Ph.D, the Centre expressed concern over what it described as “selective attributions” and “mischaracterisation” of Bishop Kukah’s recent remarks at two major events: the 2025 World Report on Religious Freedom launched at the Vatican on 21 October, and the 46th Supreme Convention of the Knights of St. Mulumba held in Kaduna on 28 November. According to the Centre, nowhere in Bishop Kukah’s comments did he diminish the seriousness of faith-based persecution in Nigeria. Instead, it reaffirmed that the Bishop has consistently highlighted the alarming rise in targeted attacks on Christian com...
