BREAKING: LABOUR PARTY ANNOUNCES NATIONWIDE CONGRESSES, SETS TIMETABLE FOR WARD, LGA AND STATE CONGRESSES

Abuja, November 12, 2025 – The Labour Party (LP) has officially announced the commencement of its nationwide congresses to elect new officers and national delegates across the country, in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

In a detailed guideline released by the party’s National Headquarters in Abuja and signed by the National Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, and the National Secretary, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the party unveiled a comprehensive timetable and procedures for the conduct of Ward, Local Government, and State Congresses.

According to the document titled “Guidelines for Ward, LGA and State Congresses to Elect Officers and National Delegates 2025,” only members who have validated their membership and are not in arrears of the constitutionally prescribed ₦100 monthly dues will be eligible to participate. The statement emphasized that the payment of dues must be made into the official Labour Party subscription account with Zenith Bank.

The congresses are expected to be held sequentially, starting from the Ward Congress, followed by the Local Government Congress, and culminating in the State Congress.


Ward Congress

All party members who have fulfilled their financial obligations for at least three months will serve as delegates. Positions to be contested include:

Chairman

Two (2) Vice Chairmen (one must be female)

Secretary

Assistant Secretary

Treasurer

Financial Secretary

Publicity Secretary

Legal Adviser

Auditor

Women Leader

Youth Leader

Five (5) Ex-Officio members (at least one female)



Local Government Congress

Membership will include all ward executive members, elected ward delegates, and LGA officers. Positions to be contested are:

Chairman

Four (4) Vice Chairmen (one must be female)

Secretary

Three (3) Assistant Secretaries

Treasurer

Financial Secretary

Publicity Secretary

Legal Adviser

Auditor

Women Leader

Youth Leader

Five (5) Ex-Officio members (at least one female)


State Congress

The State Congress will include delegates from the LGAs, the State Executive Council, and elected representatives of the party from various levels. Offices to be filled include:


State Chairman

Six (6) Deputy State Chairmen (one from each senatorial district, including at least one female)

State Secretary

Two (2) Assistant Secretaries

State Treasurer

State Financial Secretary

State Organizing Secretary

State Publicity Secretary

State Legal Adviser

State Auditor

State Women Leader and Deputies

State Youth Leader and Assistant Youth Leaders

Five (5) National Delegates (one must be female)

Five (5) Ex-Officio members (one must be female)


Nomination Fees

The party also released the official nomination fees for various offices.

State Offices: Chairman – ₦250,000; Deputy Chairman – ₦150,000; Secretary – ₦200,000; Others – ₦100,000.

LGA Offices: Chairman – ₦50,000; Vice Chairman – ₦40,000; Secretary – ₦45,000; Treasurer – ₦40,000; Others – ₦30,000.

Ward Offices: Chairman – ₦10,000; Vice Chairman – ₦5,000; Secretary – ₦8,000; Treasurer – ₦7,000; Others – ₦3,000.


Sales of nomination forms are scheduled to commence on November 18, 2025, and close on November 25, 2025, while all forms must be submitted no later than November 28, 2025.


Voting and Code of Conduct

The party reaffirmed that voting will be conducted after proper accreditation, and members will queue behind their preferred aspirants in accordance with Article 24(ii) of the Labour Party Constitution. The guideline stressed transparency, stating that the process must allow all members to clearly see the results of each election.

In a stern warning against electoral misconduct, the party cited Article 22 of its Constitution, which prohibits the use of armed groups, coercion, or any form of violence during the congresses. Members found violating this provision will be disqualified, even if they win.

The statement concluded by urging members to conduct themselves peacefully, emphasizing that the exercise aims to strengthen internal democracy and unity within the Labour Party as it prepares for future political engagements.
