🦅 Super Eagles Edge Taifa Stars 2-1 in AFCON 2025 Opener

FÈS, MOROCCO

Nigeria’s Super Eagles began their quest for a fourth continental title with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Taifa Stars of Tanzania in their opening Group C match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Match Summary

The Super Eagles controlled much of the early proceedings at the Stade de Fès. The breakthrough came in the 36th minute when defender Semi Ajayi powered home a header from an Alex Iwobi cross.

The match took a dramatic turn early in the second half. Shortly after Victor Osimhen had a goal ruled out for offside, Tanzania stunned the Nigerian defense with a clinical equalizer from Charles M'Mombwa in the 50th minute.

However, the Nigerian response was almost instantaneous. Just two minutes later, Ademola Lookman restored the lead with a spectacular individual effort, curling the ball past the Tanzanian goalkeeper to seal the three points.

According to the Centre, nowhere in Bishop Kukah’s comments did he diminish the seriousness of faith-based persecution in Nigeria. Instead, it reaffirmed that the Bishop has consistently highlighted the alarming rise in targeted attacks on Christian com...
