BREAKING: INEC Registers Two New Political Parties in Nigeria.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally registered two new political parties in Nigeria, signalling a shift in the country’s political landscape as the 2027 general elections draw nearer.
INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan made the announcement on Thursday during the commission’s first quarterly consultative meeting with political party leaders in Abuja.
The newly registered parties are:
▪︎ Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA)
▪︎ National Democratic Congress (NDC) — registered following a Federal High Court judgement in Lokoja directing INEC to recognise its application.
INEC has indicated that certificates of registration will be issued to both parties.
The two new registrations come after INEC received a large volume of interest from associations across the country. The commission reported receiving 171 letters of intent from groups seeking to become registered political parties, but the majority were screened out for failing to meet legal requirements.
In a previous update, INEC disclosed that 157 of those associations were disqualified for not satisfying constitutional and regulatory criteria — with only a small number meeting the threshold to advance in the process.
The election umpire’s rules require compliance with Section 222 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and relevant provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022, among other guidelines, for party registration.
The registration of new parties occurs against the backdrop of preparations for the 2027 general elections. INEC has reiterated that a credible, updated voter register is central to free and fair polls — and plans are underway for a comprehensive voter revalidation exercise ahead of the elections.
Political analysts say that while Nigeria already has a crowded field of parties, the successful registration of new platforms can broaden democratic choice — provided they develop clear ideologies, build grassroots support, and uphold internal party democracy.
For many aspiring political movements, the challenge is not just registration but translating that status into meaningful representation and influence in a political environment historically dominated by established parties.
