INEC Fixes February 20, 2027 for Presidential Election, March 6 for Governorship Polls

13th February, 2026

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced the dates for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, setting February 20, 2027 for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, and March 6, 2027 for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections.

The announcement was made on Thursday by the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, during a press briefing in Abuja.

Constitutional Backing

According to the INEC Chairman, the Commission’s decision aligns strictly with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and the Electoral Act 2022.

He explained that the tenure of the President, Vice-President, Governors, and Deputy Governors will expire on May 28, 2027, while members of the National and State Assemblies will conclude their tenure in early June 2027.

Citing Sections 76(2), 116(2), 132(2), and 178(2) of the Constitution, Amupitan stated that elections must be conducted not earlier than 150 days and not later than 30 days before the expiration of current office holders’ terms.

He further referenced Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, which mandates INEC to publish election notices at least 360 days before the election date.

Scope of the 2027 Elections

The 2027 general elections will cover:

▪︎ President and Vice-President

▪︎ Governors and Deputy Governors (except in states with off-cycle elections)

▪︎ Members of the Senate

▪︎ Members of the House of Representatives

▪︎ Members of State Houses of Assembly

INEC confirmed that the detailed timetable and schedule of activities have been uploaded to its official website and circulated to registered political parties and stakeholders.

Resident Electoral Commissioners across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory have been directed to publish election notices in their respective constituencies.

INEC disclosed that political party primaries will be conducted within the legally approved timeframe. Submission of nomination forms will occur within designated windows, while political campaigns will begin as stipulated by law and end 24 hours before Election Day.

Electoral Amendment Bill

The INEC Chairman also addressed ongoing discussions around the proposed Electoral Amendment Bill currently before the National Assembly. He acknowledged stakeholders’ concerns and emphasized the Commission’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s electoral framework to guarantee transparency, credibility, and fairness.

He reiterated that the authority to fix election dates rests solely with INEC, reaffirming the Commission’s constitutional independence.

Infocity News will continue to monitor developments as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum across the country.

According to the Centre, nowhere in Bishop Kukah’s comments did he diminish the seriousness of faith-based persecution in Nigeria. Instead, it reaffirmed that the Bishop has consistently highlighted the alarming rise in targeted attacks on Christian com...
