PRESIDENTIAL DIRECTIVE: IGP Kayode Egbetokun sacked; AIG Tunji Disu Named New Police Chief

ABUJA – In a major shake-up of Nigeria's security architecture, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has reportedly stepped down from his position following a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Reliable sources within the Presidency and Force Headquarters confirmed on Monday, February 23, 2026, that the President requested Egbetokun’s resignation during a high-level meeting at the Presidential Villa. Taking over the mantle of leadership is Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Tunji Disu, who is set to become the nation's new police helmsman.

While an official statement from the Presidency is still being finalized, preparations for a formal handover ceremony at the Louis Edet House are already underway. Egbetokun, who was appointed as the 22nd IGP on June 19, 2023, departs after a tenure marked by both intensive police reforms and significant public scrutiny over human rights concerns.

Though Egbetokun’s tenure was legally extended via the amended Police Act 2024—which theoretically allowed him to remain in office until 2027—the President has opted for a change in leadership to steer the Force in a new direction.

Meet the New Police Boss: AIG Tunji Disu

The incoming IGP, Tunji Disu, is widely regarded as one of the most intellectually grounded and operationally savvy officers in the Nigeria Police Force. Before this elevation, Disu had served in several high-profile capacities, including:

• AIG Special Protection Unit (SPU): His most recent strategic role at Force Headquarters.

• FCT Commissioner of Police: Where he earned accolades for tackling infrastructure theft and urban crime.

• Head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT): Succeeding Abba Kyari and restoring professional integrity to the unit.

• Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Lagos: Where he gained fame for his "pro-people" policing model.

What This Means for Nigeria

The appointment of Tunji Disu is seen by many analysts as a move to "re-professionalize" the police. Known for his expertise in criminology and forensic investigation, Disu is expected to prioritize technology-driven policing and improve the battered image of the Force regarding civil liberties.

Infocity News will continue to monitor the Presidential Villa for the formal announcement and upcoming swearing-in ceremony.

Kukah Centre Denounces Misleading Reports, Reaffirms Stand on Ongoing Persecution of Christians The Kukah Centre (TKC) has issued a strongly worded statement distancing itself from media reports that falsely suggest its founder, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, denied the existence of Christian persecution or genocide in Nigeria. In a press release signed by the Executive Director, Fr. Atta Barkindo, Ph.D, the Centre expressed concern over what it described as “selective attributions” and “mischaracterisation” of Bishop Kukah’s recent remarks at two major events: the 2025 World Report on Religious Freedom launched at the Vatican on 21 October, and the 46th Supreme Convention of the Knights of St. Mulumba held in Kaduna on 28 November. According to the Centre, nowhere in Bishop Kukah’s comments did he diminish the seriousness of faith-based persecution in Nigeria. Instead, it reaffirmed that the Bishop has consistently highlighted the alarming rise in targeted attacks on Christian com...
