Peter Obi Dumps ADC, Joins NDC, Expands Nationwide Base

In a major development ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has officially left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and joined the National Democratic Coalition (NDC), following disagreements over the zoning of the party’s presidential ticket to the South.

The move marks a significant political realignment, as the NDC has also announced that it is welcoming major grassroots and political blocs into its fold. These include Obi’s movement, widely known as the Obidient movement, with structures across the country, as well as the political base of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso - popularly referred to as the Kwankwasiyya movement, also with nationwide structures.

In addition, several serving and former senators, along with political candidates from across the country, have also joined the NDC, making it a more robust and formidable platform ahead of the next election cycle.

Sources within the coalition say the integration of these movements and political figures is aimed at building a broad-based platform capable of challenging established parties. The inclusion of Obi’s loyal support base and Kwankwaso’s well-organized grassroots network is expected to significantly boost the NDC’s reach, particularly among youths and voters in key regions.

While official statements from all parties involved are still being awaited, the development has already sparked conversations across political circles, with analysts describing it as one of the most consequential opposition alignments in recent times.

According to the Centre, nowhere in Bishop Kukah’s comments did he diminish the seriousness of faith-based persecution in Nigeria. Instead, it reaffirmed that the Bishop has consistently highlighted the alarming rise in targeted attacks on Christian com...
