AWA IJEBU, OGUN STATE
Thousands of youths filled the streets of Awa Ijebu, North Ijebu today 16th of June, 2026 in a peaceful demonstration over an alleged dispute concerning land at Ereyé to Orita Fufu. The crowd, made up largely of young men and women, moved through major roads with placards and banners as they called attention to what they described as a violation of their rights to ancestral property. The protest remained orderly throughout the period this reporter was on ground, with security personnel present to maintain peace.
At the scene, protesters carried placards bearing messages such as “Release Our Boys”, “Save Awa Ancestral Land”, and “We Demand Due Process”. Several chants were directed at the palace of Oba Oba Abib Awobajo, the Limeri of Awa Kingdom, while some participants also called for action against a group they referred to as “regbe-regbe”. The mood was tense but controlled, and no incident of violence or property damage was observed as the youths made their demands known to passersby and journalists.
According to a statement in circulation attributed to “Awa Ijebu Youths” and statements made by some protesters to this reporter, the land in question is ancestral and serves as a source of livelihood for many families in the community. The youths allege that agents acting under government and traditional authority entered the land without prior notice, dialogue, or compensation before taking possession and declaring it crown property. They stressed that they are not against development or the office of the throne, but insisted that any action affecting citizens’ land must comply with constitutional provisions on due process, fair hearing, and compensation.
The protesters also expressed concern over the detention of several youths who were allegedly arrested during earlier confrontations at the site. They said the arrest of their colleagues for demanding accountability was unacceptable and called for their immediate release. The demonstrators appealed to community leaders, civil society organizations, and relevant government agencies to intervene and ensure that the matter is resolved through peaceful dialogue and lawful procedures rather than force.
As at the time of filing this report, the protest was still ongoing and the atmosphere remained calm. Security agencies were seen monitoring the crowd to prevent any breakdown of law and order. Efforts to obtain an official response from the palace of Oba Abib Awobajo and from Ogun State Government authorities on the allegations were ongoing. This report is based on direct observation at the scene and on statements available from the protesters, and all parties are presumed innocent until proven otherwise.
