A Bleeding Democracy, A Rising Hope by Sen. Wale Kuku

A Bleeding Democracy, A Rising Hope by Sen. Wale Kuku

As we commemorate Democracy Day, we reflect on Nigeria's democratic journey, one marked by resilience, sacrifice, progress, and challenges. While our democracy has endured and matured, it continues to bear the scars of poor governance, economic hardship, and unrealized aspirations. Yet, despite its wounds, democracy remains our surest path to national development and collective prosperity.

As a student of the ideals of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, whose vision of people-centred governance continues to inspire me, I firmly believe that democracy must ultimately be measured by the welfare of the people. Elections alone do not define democratic success; the true dividends of democracy are found in quality education, economic opportunities, security, social justice, and improved living standards.

As a nation, we must break the cycle of disjointed growth and embrace a shared vision for sustainable development. Leaders and citizens alike must commit to accountability, continuity of purpose, and active participation in shaping our future.

I am particularly encouraged by the growing interest of young Nigerians in leadership and governance. Their creativity, innovation, and energy are vital to building a stronger and more responsive democracy. We must create opportunities for them to contribute meaningfully to nation-building.

On this Democracy Day, let us renew our commitment to justice, inclusion, responsible leadership, and national progress. Together, we can transform a bleeding democracy into a thriving one and build a Nigeria that truly works for all.

Happy Democracy Day.

Kukah Centre Denounces Misleading Reports, Reaffirms Stand on Ongoing Persecution of Christians The Kukah Centre (TKC) has issued a strongly worded statement distancing itself from media reports that falsely suggest its founder, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, denied the existence of Christian persecution or genocide in Nigeria. In a press release signed by the Executive Director, Fr. Atta Barkindo, Ph.D, the Centre expressed concern over what it described as “selective attributions” and “mischaracterisation” of Bishop Kukah’s recent remarks at two major events: the 2025 World Report on Religious Freedom launched at the Vatican on 21 October, and the 46th Supreme Convention of the Knights of St. Mulumba held in Kaduna on 28 November. According to the Centre, nowhere in Bishop Kukah’s comments did he diminish the seriousness of faith-based persecution in Nigeria. Instead, it reaffirmed that the Bishop has consistently highlighted the alarming rise in targeted attacks on Christian com...
