NYCN Ijebu-Ode Demands Immediate Government Action Over Recurring Offensive Odour
By InfoCity News
The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ijebu-Ode Chapter, has called on the Ogun State Government and relevant environmental agencies to urgently address the recurring offensive odour being experienced across parts of Ijebu-Ode and its environs.
The call follows the circulation of a public awareness flyer highlighting growing concerns among residents over the persistent unpleasant smell, which has reportedly returned to the town and continues to affect daily life.
Speaking on the development, the Coordinator of NYCN Ijebu-Ode Chapter, Comrade Odunowo, described the situation as a serious environmental and public health concern that requires immediate government intervention. He warned that the recurring odour can no longer be dismissed as a mere inconvenience, stressing that it poses potential risks to residents, particularly children, the elderly, pregnant women, and other vulnerable members of the community.
According to him, the continued exposure of residents to the offensive odour raises concerns about environmental safety and the protection of lives and property, making it imperative for the appropriate authorities to act without delay.
The youth leader called on environmental regulatory agencies and other relevant stakeholders to swiftly identify the source of the emission, stop further pollution, protect public health, and ensure accountability where necessary.
Comrade Odunowo emphasized that access to a safe and healthy environment is a fundamental right of every citizen, noting that residents should not be subjected to conditions that may threaten their well-being.
"We cannot remain silent while our people continue to breathe air that many residents consider unsafe and unhealthy. The protection of lives and property must remain a top priority for government and all relevant agencies," he stated.
The NYCN Ijebu-Ode Chapter further urged the Ogun State Government to take proactive steps to protect communities, schools, and vulnerable groups from any environmental hazards associated with the recurring odour.
The Council reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the welfare of young people and residents of Ijebu-Ode, while calling for urgent and lasting solutions to the environmental challenge.
Residents have also been encouraged to cooperate with relevant authorities and report observations that may assist ongoing efforts to identify and address the source of the pollution.
