Uber Exits Nigeria After 12 Years

After 12 years of being part of everyday life for millions of Nigerians, Uber has officially announced that it is leaving the Nigerian market, effective September 2, 2026.

Uber first launched in Lagos in 2014 and quickly became one of the most popular ride-hailing options in the country. According to the company, the decision to leave Nigeria comes after reviewing its business priorities and investment plans across Africa.

Uber also clarified that its exit is not connected to the recent FAAN directive concerning e-hailing services at Nigerian airports.

The departure will undoubtedly affect both riders and drivers who have relied on the platform over the years, while also marking a major moment for Nigeria’s growing ride-hailing industry. Uber’s Help Centre will remain available until September 23 to assist users with outstanding issues.

For many Nigerians, Uber was more than just an app. It became a familiar part of getting around, especially in busy cities like Lagos. Its exit therefore brings an end to a significant chapter in Nigeria’s transportation story.
